Applied Laboratory of Interactive Visualization and Embodiment (ALiVE) is an interdisciplinary research initiative of the School of Creative Media, City University of Hong Kong. Situated at the Hong Kong Science Park, ALiVE is an incubator and innovations showcase for new forms of creativity at the cutting edge of digital media in society.   The tour provides opportunity to visit its pioneering technical infrastructure made up of unique display environments, production systems and computer graphics techniques, including:
  • ECLoud: an interactive spatial browser for the re-discovery of personal cultural data based on the crowdsourced World War 1 archives of Europeana. It transforms linear browsing of web based information into an embodied experience.
  • iDOME: a novel hemispherical projection system that provides a fully immersive visualization experience for a small group of viewers.
  • LOOK UP: a series of digitally animated photographic installations making use of a hemispherical projection screen. These works presents fisheye photographs of a range of different ceiling architectures found in public, private, religious and secular buildings in different places. With their straight upwards view angle, these images are digitally processed and animated to create an anamorphic optical experience that gives viewers a strong sense of spatial presence and virtual movement within these buildings.
  • PLACE_Hampi: an embodied theatre of participation in the drama of Hindu mythology focused at the most significant archaeological, historical and sacred locations of the World Heritage site Vijayanagara (Hampi), South India. It is an interactive installation that projects 3D imagery onto a 9-meter diameter circular screen from a rotating platform that is controlled by one of the viewers. Enfolded in this interactive installation, viewers explore a virtual landscape of panoramic locations enlivened by animated mythological events that reveal intangible aspects of pilgrims active at the temple complex. Comprised of high resolution augmented stereoscopic panoramas and surrounded by a rich acoustic field, PLACE-Hampi articulates an unprecedented level of viewer co-presence in a narrative re-discovery of a cultural landscape.
  • ReACTOR: we will show two programmes “Double District”, directed and choreographed by Saburo Teshigawara, performed by Saburo Teshigawara and Rihoko Sato, and “UNMAKEABLELOVE”, adapted from Samuel Beckett’s narrative The Lost Ones, which is a virtual reality installation that the viewer can use physical torches as interfaces, walk around and peer into a community of computer generated people who are living in a severe state of physical and psychological entropy.
